At Behind The Wheel Defensive Driving School, we believe that safe driving starts with confident instruction. Proudly based in Wichita, Kansas, we offer expert-led Defensive Driving Courses for teens, adults, and foreign-speaking students. Whether you’re working toward your license, satisfying a court requirement, addressing an out-of-state ticket or judge’s ruling, looking to qualify for an insurance discount (check with your provider), or simply want to become a safer driver — we’re here to help, with personalized attention every step of the way.
Drivers under the age of 17 are required by Kansas to hold a learners permit for 1 year or until they turn 17, whichever comes first.
Classroom instruction is held in person over two Saturday mornings (4 hours each) and meets Kansas state requirements. Led by experienced instructors, the sessions are interactive and engaging to help reinforce essential driving skills and safety knowledge.
State Requirements for New Drivers
New drivers must complete 14 Hours which includes:
8 hours of classroom instruction, and
6 hours of behind-the-wheel training
This requirement also applies to individuals whose licenses have expired and need to requalify.
By taking our course, you may obtain a Learner’s Permit and your Kansas Drivers License from the Motor Vehicle Department based on ‘GDL’ law (Graduated Drivers License law as of Jan 1, 2010).
We offer a state-approved, classroom-based Defensive Driving Course available in two formats to fit your needs: 4-hour or 8-hour sessions.
Course Options:
4-Hour Format – Great for general driver education or potential insurance discounts and out of state tickets.
8-Hour Format – Commonly required for court-ordered driver education and provides more in-depth instruction on safe, responsible driving
Note: Always check with your insurance provider or the requesting authority to confirm which course format is appropriate for your situation.
We understand that every student is unique. That’s why we offer tailored instruction for:
We provide the Kansas Driver’s Manual in over 20 languages and offer the official written test in 7 different languages, helping our ESL students navigate the licensing process with ease.
